Self-Sustaining Building and Biggest Regret

Watch the WEBcast

Kristin Ward co-hosts as we welcome the project managers behind the first Living Building in the State of Washington to the podcast.  Stacy Smedley and Chris Hellstern of KMD Architects spearheaded efforts to build a fully self-sustaining science building on the campus at Bertschi Elementary on Capitol Hill in Seattle.  Solar panels, a composting toilet, rainwater cisterns, a greenhouse, and a creek that flows through the center of the complex (a suggestion from a student, no less) combine to wholly integrate the building into its natural surroundings.
